Government supporters yesterday attacked a JVP meeting at Kiribathgoda after vowing not to allow the party to have any meetings in the area. The JVP said that UPFA thugs targeted the Janatha Hotel at Kiribathgoda, where the meeting was held. A senior party spokesman told ‘The Island’ urged the police not to turn a blind eye to violence directed at opposition political parties.
He said that a group of supporters of a ruling party minister had turned up at the venue where the meeting was due to take place and caused extensive damage and said that they would not allow the meeting to take place.
Shortly thereafter, a second group had attacked people with glass bottles, forcing the JVP to retaliate.
One JVPer had been hit with an iron rod and hospitalised at the Ragama hospital.
This was the second incident where a political meeting has been attacked in two days.
On Saturday, supporters of Provincial supporters of another UPFA politician attacked a meeting of Ravi Karunanayaka at Thotalanga. A former MMC member was injured and hospitalised.
