Criminals absconding in foreign countries
The government and the Intelligence services should be commended for the arrest of the prize catch K. Pathmanathan, the international agent of the LTTE, the elusive fugitive. He was the chief financier and arms procurer of the LTTE. He had strong connections with certain countries, who discreetly assisted the LTTE with finance and military equipment. Now that K.P. is in custody, the Intelligence Agencies will get vital information in respect of these countries and the LTTE leaders in several countries, who assisted them in supplying finances and weapons. The government should take action to reveal their identities, to the respective countries to take legal action and pursue the possibility of getting the money repatriated to Sri Lanka. After the death of Prabakharan, K.P. considered himself the leader of the LTTE.
The Government has almost eliminated the Tigers. The President said that the government will take effective action to eliminate the underworld and the drug menace. Recent events show that the police are taking positive action against the underworld and the drug barons. The fleeing of a drug baron from the country recently, is a clear indication as to how scared they are of police action. The law abiding citizens of this country will appreciate and be grateful to the government if this twin menace, the underworld and drugs are eradicated. Recently a mother who has a son addicted to drugs confessed that she will be happier over the elimination of drugs, than even the death of Prabakharan. Families are ruined because of drugs.
Now the government should initiate action to locate those involved in criminal activities and absconding in foreign countries. To mention a few, the Chairman of Pramuka Bank, Sakvithi the tuition master, the owner of a finance company and the directors of the Ceylinco Golden Key Company. The people who deposited their hard earned money are going through immense difficulties, whilst these unscrupulous persons are leading luxurious lives in foreign countries.
Certain depositors committed suicide, whilst others are going through very hard times. If the government was able to apprehend Padmanathan, arresting these people will not be that difficult. The government, intelligence agencies and the foreign ministry should make a concerted effort to seek the assistance of Interpol and our Ambassadors in foreign countries to achieve this end.
The suffering depositors will be ever grateful to the government, if these people are arrested, brought back to Sri Lanka and legal action taken against them. This should be part of the responsibility of the Foreign Ministry.
