
We are ready to consider the General as common candidate

The UNF is ready to consider General Sarath Fonseka as the common candidate to contest the next presidential election, Co-chairman of the UNF, Mangala Samaraweera said. He made this statement at a press conference of the UNF leaders held under Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today (17).
Samaraweera said a decision on the common candidate would be arrived at once the Presidential election is announced. He observed that the common candidate would have to agree to several basic conditions that include the abolishing of the Executive Presidency, implement the 17th amendment, protect media freedom, act against fraud and corruption, formulate a plan to immediately resettle the displaced and to find a political
solution to the ethnic issue.
Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe called on the President to immediately hold the election, which has the government has spoken of since the end of the war.
SLMC Leader Rauf Hakeem also addressing the briefing challenged the president to hold a Presidential election saying the opposition was ready for it.
He said the opposition had the strength to defeat the President by backing a common candidate.
DPF General Secretary Kumara Guruparan, Sarath Manamendra from the New Sihala Urumaya and Sirimasiri Hapuarachchi from the United People’s Front also participated in the media briefing.
