Foreign Ministry sources said Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa had included his name in the list of Sri Lankan representatives attending the UN General Assembly during his visit to the US recently due to the fear that he might be arrested in the country on war crimes charges.
It is learnt that although an international Tamil organization attempted to seek legal intervention to call for the arrest of Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse when he arrived in the US on the charge of alleged war crimes committed by a US citizen, the group had to reverse the decision upon hearing the Defence Secretary had diplomatic immunity under the UN.
The Foreign Ministry source further noted that although
a Sri Lankan citizen could not be tried in a war crimes tribunal for alleged war crimes, the US could take legal action against Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, who is a US citizen.
