Sinhalese who have come from other areas are forcibly encroaching on lands owned by Tamils and Muslims in the Samanthurai Divisional Secretariat area in the Ampara District.
It is reported that among these people who are encroachintg on lands are members of the home guard unit and the police. So far the land forcibily taken by these encroachers amount to about 400 acres.
Although the real owners of the lands have lodged complaints with the Samanthurai Divisional Secretary, Ampara District Secretary and the Ampara Police with regard to the issues faced by them, no action has been taken yet by the authorities.
The land owners say that although they were provided with police protection following complaints, no action has been taken to evict the encroachers from their lands and that they are continuing to further encroach into the lands even after the police was deployed.
A formal complaint has been sent to the President alleging that a politician in the district was behind the land grab.
Ampara District Secretary Sunil Kannangara said that the people who had encroached into lands have been officially asked to leave, adding that the authorities could not evict and bring down the temporary constructions on the lands wihtout a court order permitting it.
