Magisterial inquiry into the deaths at Angulana

A young woman (who had allegedly had a clandestine affair with the OIC of the Angulana Police Station) giving evidence at the magisterial inquiry into the killing of the two young men, Dinesh Tharanga and Dhanushka Udayantha of Angulana, told court yesterday that she saw the two men being mercilessly beaten at the Angulana Police Station.

The young woman, Kalpani Fernando of Jubilee Mawatha, Walana, Panadura, on being produced before the Mount Lavinia Chief Magistrate Harsha Sethunga, said that the two men, against whom she made a complaint, had earlier attempted to rape her.

According to the woman, she had been at her grandmother’s house with her child and her paramour on that day (August 12th). At around 11.30 pm, the two young men had come in search of a match box. Later on they had returned and had tried to pull her by the hand. That had led to her going to the Angulana Police Station to lodge a complaint.

She further said that two young men were later the brought to the Police Station and she had seen some policemen beating them mercilessly. One of the young men had pleaded with the police to stop beating him and said that he would apologise to the woman. Then the OIC of the Police Station had come and told them that their names were in the police records as being underworld thugs. When the OIC was beating them his hand had struck a table and been injured.

Continuing, she said that the policemen had told her that they had asked the parents of the young men also to come to the police station. On the following day, however, when she went to the police station with her paramour they had been told that the two men had been found dead. Therefore they had left.

At that point she identified four policemen as those who had beaten the young men.

Amongst those who gave evidence were Tharanga Dharshana Fernando, an intimate friend of the young woman, two relatives of the suspect policemen and a person by the name Prabhath Kulasinghe.
