“Situation in Wanni camps worse than a hell hole” – Sarath Manamendra

News Sihala Urumaya Leader Sarath Manamendra said that while the innocent Tamil people are being forced to live in 6 feet tall shacks in unimaginable conditions the government is using these people to receive funding although the displaced people have not been provided with any facility. He said that about 10 people are forced to loive in one small shack.

Manamendra made this statement while addressing the media at the SLFP (M) Wing headquarters yesterday (18).

The party’s media unit e-mailed to us a brief note on the statement made at the press conference and below is the English translation of the Sinhala note.

“Manamendra said that due to the large scale raping of women taking place within the camps, over thousands of young Tamil girls are pregnant and do not even know the fathers of the children they are carrying.

“Manamendra further noted that the war that lasted for over three decades has taken a large number of lives of Sinhalese armed forces personnel while the LTTE organization forcefully recruited young Tamil girls and boys. As a result, parents lost their children and children lost their parents.

“The Tamil people in the north were prisoners of the LTTE for three decades. They are now made prisoners in a disgraceful manner by the government. It is a complete violation of civil rights. Various diseases have started to spread. The number of people who die daily have seen an increase. There is a long queue about 500 meters to use the toilets. Neither the males nor the females have any undergarments. They don’t have the right for employment. These kind of situations have not arisen even during Polpot’s or Idi Ameen’s times.”
