Lanka-India ties hinge on Tamils' issue: PM
India on Friday said it has asked Sri Lanka to take "effective measures" to address the concerns of displaced Tamils, as relations between the two neighbours would hinge on the issue.
Recalling his meeting with Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakshe at Shram-el-Sheikh this week, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the Rajya Sabha that "bulk" of the meeting was focussed on the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils.
"We are deeply concerned. I explained to him (Rajapakshe) we have legitimate concern about the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils. It has a bearing on Sri Lanka's relations with India." PM Singh said.
"I emphasised to him that he must take all effective measures to provide meaningful relief and rehabilitation," Singh added.
Singh was responding to the Communist Party of India member D Raja who wanted to know the outcome of his meeting with the Sri Lankan President.
"I spent considerable amount of my time in my meeting with Sri Lankan President discussing the Tamil problem. I expressed our concern about the plight of Sri Lankan Tamils, about 3 lakh people who are internally displaced and living in 33 camps," he said.
Singh was replying to clarifications sought on his statement about his meetings with world leaders at the Non-Aligned Movement Summit in Egypt. He also informed Rajapakshe that Colombo has to create conditions for meeting "legitimate political aspirations" of the Tamils under the devolution package. (PTI)

Dear MR, Please do not spoil your name which could impact on country, you did a good job eradicating terrorism, but you are doing big mistake by taking in to custody of 3,000,000. people your own specially detaining elders, children, pregnant women is unfair and injustice, if you continue this, you will very soon be rejected by the people of Sri Lanka.

India also should understand that Sri Lanka was forced to take such decisions as most of the of the neighbouring countries not only shirecked their responsibilities but also helped the terrorists to strenthen and attacked the helpless Sri Lankans. Now the Sri Lankans breath freely. Thanks to MR, neighbouring countries and our heroic citzens.

Go Bring China. Soon you'll find them sitting with you like the Dutch and the British did just a few decades ago. Chinese can never be trusted, today they have Colonial insticts just like the Dutch had... So wish you Sri Lankans all the best.

Aleem is making sence. I too love the President but some things are not right. Everything MR and this govenment does cannot be always right. Nobody is perfect it applies to Presidents and govenments also. Open your eyes and think for yourselves objectively.

Jayawardena, breathing freely is not everything. Be a little more realistic.

Devolution and empowerment of ethnic minorities may look to be a bad idea, but it may act as a strong glue to keep the nation united as it ensures honorable co-existance for all communities. Just a food for thought (News from Hundu): "Meghalaya government on Friday claimed to have prevented an alleged encroachment bid by Assam in its territory even as tension brewed in the disputed Langpih area". Two Indian states fighting on border issue, still India is one nation.
