Kohona refutes reports of prostitution in IDP camps

By Sumaiya Rizvi

The Government strongly refuted allegations as reported in “The Australian” that prostitution was taking place within the Internally Displaced Persons Camps in the Vanni district.

“It’s rubbish and nonsensical to say that prostitution takes place within those IDP camps, I have been there and I will know if something like that is happening,” Foreign Secretary Palitha Kohona said yesterday. He ruled out any possibilities of a prostitution racket within the IDP camps and denied any knowledge of it.

“I am sure in a mass of people there may be individuals who want to make a quick buck one way or other, but you have to remember the tents are so close together you can’t do anything without the entire neighborhood knowing, if you had a racket going, thousands of people will know,” Kohona said. He ruled out any possibility of even the isolated incidents of prostitution within the camps.

“These NGO’s working within the camps should be more responsible when making statements, since comments like these strain the working relationship between the government and the NGO’s more difficult,” Kohona said. There are more than 54 INGO’s and NGO’s working together with the government to improve the living standards within the IDP camps, he said.

Kohona said the military are the guys who won the war but not one single woman had been raped during the conflict.

Kohona made these observations to a news report made in the Australian media that quoted an anonymous NGO worker alleging that prostitution was taking place within the IDP camps in the Vanni district.
