Children in camps looked after well: Jayasena
By Kelum Bandara
Child Development and Women Empowerment Minister Mrs. Sumedha G. Jayasena said yesterday that 850 parentless children had been identified among the displaced civilians in Vavuniya, and action taken to look after their welfare.
Addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing, the Minister said that there is another batch of 349 children from two orphanages in Kilinochchi, living with the displaced persons now. She said that the government had obtained an order from the Vavuniya magistrate to rehabilitate these orphans at separate camps.
“With regard to those 850 children, we cannot say whether their parents have died or gone missing. We still have a programme to trace them if they are alive,” she said. She said that there is a child population of 50,000 among the displaced civilians as identified by the government and 35 doctors including some specialists had been deployed to the area to check on them for physical or mental health problems. “We subject all the children to medical check ups. We have put up pre-schools and set up play areas for them,” she said.
Commenting on the women, she said that her Ministry had set up a resource centre for them in the Menik Farm welfare village.
