Govt. gives details of President’s foreign trips

President Mahinda Rajapaksa together with relevant ministers and officials had undertaken 18 foreign trips between 2005 and September last year at a cost of nearly Rs.200 million, according to documents tabled by Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardane in parliament yesterday.
These details were revealed to the House in response to a question by UNP front-liner Ravi Karunanayake.
These trips included the visit by the President to witness the 2007 Cricket World Cup final in the Caribbean. He was accompanied by 19 others on this trip and the total cost was Rs.5.4 million.
The highest amount of Rs.47 million was spent for his official visit to the United States to participate at the 63rd sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. He was accompanied by 23 officials for this tour.
The government also submitted details of the financial benefits gained through these official visits. It said a number of MoUs were signed with countries such as China, Japan and India while the Hambantota Port Development Project and the Puttalam Coal Power Plant Project were negotiated during his Chinese tour.
Among the other benefits accrued from this tour are the Colombo-Katunayake expressway project worth US$ 248 million and a road construction project worth US$ 400 million. Similar financial benefits had also been obtained from his visits to Japan and Jordan.
According to the details presented by the Chief Government Whip numerous benefits had been obtained from the President’s other foreign trips as well.
