Anandasangaree against issuing IDs to 10-year-olds

The Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) President V. Anandasangaree made a request to President Mahinda Rajapaksa against a reported decision to issue identity cards to children over 10-years-old in IDP camps.
In a letter to the President he said this move is almost similar to the cyanide capsule the LTTE made the innocent child-recruits to carry.

He added; “I am perturbed over the decision of the Government to issue identity cards to children over 10-years-old. No parent whether inside the camp or outside the camp, be they Sinhalese, Tamils or Muslims from any part of Sri Lanka will welcome this move. One can not be either wrong all the time or right all the time. Whether what I say is palatable to you or not, I do not know, but with the limited knowledge I have, I am thoroughly convinced that it will prove counter-productive and disastrous. I therefore very humbly urge you to stop the authorities from doing so.

“In the alternative, have the scheme extended to all the 10-year-olds in the country. If your Excellency feels it will help the children in several ways or limit it to children over 16 years, extend it to children country-wide so that they may not have the feeling that they are a different, or not equal to children of their age, living outside the camp.

“Let no sense of inferiority complex creep in to their young minds. The present sense of dependency is already hurting them as they feel akin to beggars depending on handouts for a living. “The children in the IDP camps should be treated with utmost sympathy and not with contempt. They have undergone hardship from the time they were in their mothers wombs and they have been living in constant fear and tension for a great many years. The actions of a foolish terror group was responsible for forcing them into the worst experience of their lives during the last days of the war.

“I humbly request you not to add to the burdens of these children by labelling them by implication as Tigers.”
