Child Focus Groups to be installed at IDP centres

Child Focus Groups will be immediately established at IDP welfare centres in the Vanni to look after the welfare of displaced children, Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority, Jagath Wellawatte said.
Speaking to the Daily Mirror Mr. Wellawatte said that Groups will be established with the collaboration of the Ministry of Justice and the UNICEF.
These focus groups will have representatives of the National Child Protection Authority, the Department of Probation and Child Care and the other relevant officers.
He said most children had been suffering from malnutrition and had contracted infectious diseases. In addition a large number of children are facing parental and guardian problems resulting from deaths due to the terrorist attacks when they were crossing over to safety of government control areas. Mr. Wellawatte said that the Authority is taking action to arrange guardianship for children without parents or proper guardians. Mr Wellawatte further said he will be visiting the IDP centres to inspect the work of the Authority.
