Priests in IDP camps seek permission to leave

Six Catholic priests reported to be among the IDPs in Vavuniya and are seeking permission to go to the Bishop’s House in Jaffna, church sources said yesterday.

This was reported by a team of officials from Caritas Sri Lanka - the social service arm of the Catholic Bishops conference who visited Vavuniya earlier this week. Sources said a team of Caritas Sri Lanka officials will meet Senior Presidential Advisor Basil Rajapaka to seek government’s permission to leave the camps and go to the Bishop’s House in Jaffna.

These priests have been rescued by the security forces from the war torn areas during the recently concluded battle. It was also reported that Fr. Francis Joseph had been missing since the final battle and the church officials in Jaffna are trying to locate him. Reports coming in from the area also said Caritas Director Vannai and his Caritas Jaffna-HUDEC Assistant Rev. Fr. Vasanthaseelan had been seriously injured on April 23, in the Valaignarmadam area and had been transferred to Colombo from Vavuniya for further medical treatment.
