Britain outraged over embassy attack in Lanka

The British High Commission in Colombo yesterday expressed outrage over the protest staged outside its embassy premises, questioning why the authorities did nothing to prevent it from turning violent.
“We are outraged that the authorities can allow this to get so violent. The embassy property itself has been damaged,” an official from the British High Commission told Daily Mirror.
The High Commission property suffered heavy damage as thousands of protesters gathered outside the premises yesterday morning protesting against the alleged British intervention in Sri Lanka. The protestors also shouted slogans alleging Britain was supporting the Tigers.
The protest erupted hours after the LTTE essentially conceded defeat in the quarter century old war with the government. Protesters threw rotten eggs and stones at the embassy compound and broke several windows. They also burned an effigy of British Foreign Secretary David Miliband before throwing it over the high walls and into the embassy compound.
Despite the protest turning so violent and it being headed by a government ally, the JVP, the government said yesterday that it would not interfere in the incident as it involved criminal activities. “This is a criminal activity. It is not the responsibility of the government to interfere in this situation,” Foreign Secretary Dr. Palitha Kohona said.
The police, in the meantime, said it has launched a full scale investigation into the attack and would arrest those responsible for causing damage to the embassy premises. “We will investigate the matter,” a police official said.
The protest was organized weeks after a similar protest was staged outside the British High Commission during Mr. Miliband’s visit to the country with his French counterpart Minister Bernard Kouchner. A group of Sri Lankan Buddhist monks from the JHU, another government ally, staged the protest as the government welcomed Mr. Miliband into the country for a 24 hour visit.
The monks alleged Miliband was a representative of terrorists and had arrived in the country to help Prabhakaran and his cause.
