Chariots of Gana devi Kovil unable to cross bridge
By L.B.Senaratne
Chariots of the ancient Ganadevi Kovil/ Selvavinayagar Temple at Katukelle that has connections with the Kandy Esala Perahera, cannot proceed on its traditional route, for the temple’s annual procession, due to a blunder made by the Road Development Authority.
The RDA has constructed a overhead pedestrian bridge across the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Mawatha (Peradeniya Road ) near the Good Shepherd convent, which has made it impossible to drag the “Chariots of God's” across that road.
It is learnt that Temple authorities had apprised authorities in this regard, but to no avail. The RDA has informed the temple that if they wish to proceed on this route then the height of the Chariots should be reduced. These Chariots are made according to astrological specifications according to the specific Deity carried in these Chariots and they cannot be cut down according to the whims and fancies of public servants, a temple official said
Many ask whether the same problem would arise with the Kandy Historic Esala Perahera, where Tuskers go during the water cutting day to take part in the Getambe water cutting area, which also takes the same route where the RDA bridge has been constructed.
