RW/ UNP: NO DEMOCRACY IN SRILANKA !!!???

Ranil

Its now up to President to appoint CC - Ranil....by Piyasena Dissanayake

UNP and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said that all other nominations to the Constitutional Council were completed and the President could now make his nomination so that the Council could be appointed without further delay.

Addressing a party rally held at Ratmalana on Tuesday (10), Wickremesinghe said that if the President further delays the appointment of the Constitutional Council, the UNP was ready to take to the streets to safeguard democracy.

If the President makes his nomination and appoints the Council, he and the Government could be free from at least some of the accusations made by the international community that there was no democracy in Sri Lanka, he said.

The President had faced several problems in appointing the Council when he had assumed duties but now that the nominations to be made by the Opposition Leader and the Prime Minister had been completed, he said. Five persons had been named for the Council and the issue of appointing of the nominee by the minor parties too had been clarified by the Speaker. All that remains were to make the President’s nomination to the Council so that it could be appointed, he said.

If the President agrees that appointment of independent commissions would strengthen democracy in the country all he had to do was to appoint of the Constitutional Council without any hesitation or giving excuses for not doing so, he said.

Colombo District MP Ravi Karunanayake, UNP Western Provincial candidates Mohan Lal Grero, Nimal Bulathsinhala, Srinath Lalka Kumarasinghe also addressed the rally.
