Dear All,
25 children killed in Vanni in last 2days - Total 2867 killed and 7187 injured in 2009 only
Children are the worst affected by the SL killings in Vanni
Sri Lankan military shelling on safety zone continued on Monday (09.02.2009) and went on to Tuesday (today) morning amidst mini-cyclone and lashing rains, killing 74 civilians and injuring more than 100. More than one third of the victims killed were children. The inhuman act of Sri Lankan military deliberately targeted all the areas of the safe zone where civilians are already victims of flood and a mini-cyclone. Sri Lankan military used all lethal ammunitions such as artillery-fired cluster shells, fire-shells and Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) shells.
56 civilians were killed on Monday, out of which 18 were children. 12 civilians including 4 children were slain in Ampalavanpokkanai, 11 were killed in Pachchaip-pulmoaddai and 3 of them were children. 5 of the 9 civilians slain in Valaignarmadam and 3 of the 7 killed in Maaththa'lan were children. 2 of the 9 killed at Iraddaivaaykkaal were children and one of the 8 reported killed in Mullivaaykkaal was a child.
Shelling continued on Tuesday morning from 2:30 a.m. So far, 18 civilians were reported killed, 9 in Ampalavanpokka'nai, 4 in Pachchaip-pulmoaddai, 3 at Valaignarmadam and 2 in Mullivaaykkaal. The casualty figure is expected to rise, according to local NGO workers helping the displaced.
A lashing rain that started on Sunday night became a mini-cyclone on Monday severely causing misery to the already suffering civilians in the safe zone. The mini-cyclone blew away the temporary tarpaulin tents and the low land adjacent to sea coast where the people were herded became heavily flooded. Many families were stranded due to the floods, and the poor children drenched wet standing without shelter was a common sight.
