Tamils Demonstrate How!!!
Foreign Matters By Tim Marshall, Foreign Affairs Editor.
The weekend's demonstration by Britain's Tamil population showed us how a demonstration in the UK should be run. Or rather - walked.
The anti Israeli demos of recent weeks saw thousands of young men running through the streets, throwing crash barriers at the police and chanting obscenities. My favourite was the deeply religious young man screaming 'Allah Akbhar you f%3king pooftah cowards' at retreating police officers.
The Tamils by contrast, assembled peacefully, and noisily, and cheerfully, in their tens of thousands, marched, presented a petition to Downing Street, made their point, got their media coverage, and went home.
They did not hold aloft thousands of Tamil Tiger flags, they did not chant 'Sinhalese To The Gas', they did not howl 'We are All Tigers Now', they failed to smash up any cafes or attack Sri Lankan restaurants, nor did they attempt to storm the Sri Lankan High Commission.
The word 'genocide' was banded about carelessly, as it often is these days, but the organisers of the march and the elders of the communities spoke instead of shouting, walked instead of running, and earned respect instead of arrests.

You think from all the 125.000 to 150.000 Tamils are asylum seekers?
And if not when you would think the half of the or just 10.000 would be legal citizens of the UK....
You would expect them to fight and demolish everything in their way... is that your point?
What kind of statement is that?
Demonstration is not an event to make trouble!!!
(Just for you, seems like you missunderstood something)
It is a chance to tell the world want bothers you!!!!
All others, the troublemakers, missunderstood it too.
Oh, see.... you seem to have something in common....

Sir
Your comment on the Sri Lankan demostration is deserved of the compliment that you understand and are aware of the pain of the people of Sri Lanka, and their civilized, respect for human rights. Their peaceful demonstration shows their deep sense of respect for the rules of civilisation, and an inate sense of a very fine culture, not demonstrated, sadly, by other demonstrators in the recent past.

February 3, 2009 10:03 PMHi Tim
Is there anything one can do to get the UN and World opinion-makers to react to the horrific situation in Sri Lanka? The silence is deafening. The Gaza massacre had EVERYBODY jumping up and down, albeit Israel's illegal actions have been shelved - 'filed under foot'. And HAMAS continue as before. I think I will send everyone in the UN a copy of Dr Daniel Coleman's much lauded book, 'Emotional Intelligence', as they appear to have plenty of time to read, as they do nothing constructive with regard to their Mission Statement.

BrendaReport this commentPosted by: Coconut | February 3, 2009 8:29 PMThe Tamils demonstrators have successfully demonstrated that you can get your point across without resorting to violence during a protest. Well done!
I think part the problem is the Tamils don’t have other counties registering their concerns about what is going on in Sri Lanka, unlike the Middle East where there are a number supportive of the Palestinian movement. Unfortunately for the Tamils until other countries or the U.N. is willing to speak out the practices of the Sri Lankan government will continue...

February 3, 2009 8:23 PMMethinks – thank you for your kind comments which have come as a pleasant surprise. I should take some of the responsibly for some of the remarks aimed at me by encouraging her insofar I reacted to them where as in reality I should have ignored her and continued making my point on what ever was being debated but ignoring her is easier said than done. I had already made the decision not to post here any more as a result of her but after reading your comment I felt it is only right and proper that I reply to your post. – Debate is to put one’s argument forward but unfortunately for others it’s a concept Brenda does not seem to understand especially when it comes to President Obama. – I’ll end by once again by thanking you for your kind comments Sir…

Yes, the Tamil Demonstration showed a great degree of civilization, humanity and culture - what a difference these qualities make?

We have to stop being delusional as a nation, Britain has no more political cloud anymore. If they can not remove a criminal like mugabe, what's the scope of doing anything, we should give our UN permanent to a country like India. This government is useless, was it 2 years ago, even our Pride the Royal Navy surrendered to some iranians goons and we had to bargain to get the crew back, that's when I realised our time has clearly finished. R.I.P HMS Britannia. What I am saying most of these Tamil here, are mostly refugees, and that's a fact.Have you seen refugees demonstrating violently in Uk? My point is: compare to the militants that were demonstrating against the Zionist genocide they were more aggressive against our own Police, because most were british born or british national, and they would not fear of being deported for some reasons for disturbing the peace compare to the tamil demonstrators. These tamil here are sending back money home to sponsor these terrorists.Report this comment

Posted by: sigmund2 | February 3, 2009 3:15 PMMaxbubble999.The demonstrators wasted decades to achieve nothing? In the world of OBAMA, we can hope for some change atleast,I'm pretty sure we(demonstrators) were heard. Plus, you've misundersood the actual objective of the demonstration, what has asylum seekers and immigrants got to do with the protest? Our demand for the govt of Britain is to intervene in the SL issue as it has moral obligation to do so,the tamil population of the country were marginalised after BRITISH handed the power over to the Singhalese and gave root to the ethnic conflict years later.
