India ‘insensitive’ towards Lankan Tamils' cause: Advani
NEW DELHI (PTI): Accusing the Congress-led UPA of being ‘insensitive’ to the Sri Lankan Tamils' cause, BJP's prime ministerial candidate L. K. Advani today said the decades-old ethnic conflict in the island nation can't be resolved through the use of brutal force.
Addressing hundreds of MDMK cadre and activists of pro-Eelam outfits who began a day-long fast under the leadership of Vaiko here, Mr. Advani said the focus of the entire nation at this moment should be towards "ending the sufferings of the innocent" Tamil civilians in neighbouring Sri Lanka.
"I am sorry to say that those in office in New Delhi are insensitive towards the Sri Lankan Tamils' cause," he said.
The activists began their day-long fast here to express solidarity with hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in the war between the Lankan army and the LTTE in the island's north.
Supporting the Tamils' cause, Mr. Advani said BJP wants the issue to be resolved through negotiated political settlement and not by "brutal use of force".
Mr. Advani also strongly condemned the bombings of hospitals in Sri Lanka.
"This is for the first time, I am hearing hospitals being bombed and patients being bombed. I have never heard of this," the senior BJP leader said. "It is an issue which is of concern not only for Tamils in Tamil Nadu but for every single Indian. I urge all the citizens of the country to be associated with the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils," he said.
He asked the Lankan government to resolve the ethnic conflict by "devolving powers" to the areas where Tamils constitute a major population.
The activists also demonstrated placards and raised slogans such as "save Tamils of Sri Lanka" and "India should stop military aid to Lanka".
