13 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees arrive in Rameswaram
Rameswaram (PTI): Setting at rest speculation over the infiltration of LTTE militants, police here said 13 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees arrived from Mannar in the boat which was found abandoned at Pamban Kuthukal in the South sea early on Saturday.
Police said they got suspicious as two engines of the boat had been removed and "buried somewhere in the coastal area." But investigations revealed that the 13 refugees, including two children, had arrived in the boat, paying Rs.25000 per head, police said.
The refugees had been lodged at the Mandapam refugee camp after police verification, they said.
They told police that the boat was driven by one Seelan of Mannar district in Sri Lanka's Jaffna area.
They said thousands of people were still stranded in the Vavuniya jungles caught in the crossfire between the Lankan army and the LTTE. Nothing including drinking water was available in the jungle, they said.
Police said they were trying to find the missing engines and Seelan.
