The ICRC yesterday evacuated 509 patients and 160 staff at Puthukudiyiruppu Base (PBH) Hospital in Mullaitivu to the Puthumuttalam rural hospital yesterday on the request of the Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry, Secretary of the Ministry Dr. Athula Kahandaliyanage said.

“We requested the ICRC to remove the patients and the staff to Puthumuttalam rural hospital and the ICRC obliged,” Dr. Kahandaliyanage told the Daily Mirror yesterday. He also said the removal of the patients and the staff was only for the time being.

They would be evacuated to the Vavuniya District Hospital today as the Puthumuttalam rural hospital could not cope up with a large number of patients and staff.

The Vavuniya District Hospital has necessary infrastructure, medicine and space for patients from Puthukudiyiruppu hospital. An additional supply of drugs, medical equipment and para-medical staff would be dispatched to Vavuniya today, Dr. Kahandaliyanage said.

He also said the Ministry hade put in place a contingency plan when security forces gave the green light for the medical teams to enter newly liberated areas in Mullaitivu to transport injured civilians or treat them then and there.

A special medical team, para-medical staff, ambulances and medicine were kept standby for the purpose round the clock, he said.
