Lanka calls for ceasefire in Gaza

Sri Lanka at a special session of the UN General Assembly called for an end to the violence in Palestine, and said it knew first hand the human and material costs of violence unleashed by terrorism.
UN envoy H.M.G.S. Palihakkara on Saturday expressed solidarity with the Palestinian people and called on all parties to end military action and violence immediately and ensure a climate conducive to move towards a two-State solution.

He said that Sri Lanka had consistently advocated the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people for an independent Palestine State and coexist in peace with Israel and other neighbours and called on all parties concerned to abide by calls to end violence, and abide by Council resolution 1860 (2009).

Mr. Palihakkara said the unity of the Palestinian people was of utmost importance if it was to achieve a lasting solution to the Palestine question.

“Sri Lanka wants to see unity among Palestinians and Israelis, on the basis of the States of Israel and Palestine living side by side in peace with secure borders,” he said.

The General Assembly was gravely concerned about intensified military operations in the Gaza Strip and the resulting heavy civilian casualties even after the adoption of resolution 1860 by the Security Council. It demanded full respect for the text, and urgently called for an immediate, durable and fully respected ceasefire, leading to the full withdrawal of Israeli forces and unimpeded access for the provision of humanitarian assistance.

At a two-day special emergency session convened to address the three-week old crisis, the GA adopted its own resolution on the issue with 142 voting in favour to four against (United States, Israel, Venezuela, Nauru), with eight abstentions (Australia, Canada, Côte d’Ivoire, Ecuador, Indonesia, Iran, Nigeria, Syria).

The GA called on all parties to exert all efforts to ensure, cooperation with the Council and full and urgent compliance with resolution 1860.

It also expressed support for the Secretary-General’s mission, among other international and regional efforts underway and called on States to extend support to measures aimed at alleviating the humanitarian and economic crisis. Finally, the Assembly held out the possibility of resuming its special session if requested by member states.
