EU, Britain calls for humanitarian ceasefire in Sri Lanka!
The EU and Britain have called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Sri Lanka. EU Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Louis Michel on Thursday called for a ceasefire between Sri Lankan forces and Tamil rebels to allow trapped civilians to flee the combat zone.
"This is an escalating humanitarian catastrophe. We are extremely worried about the terrible situation facing people trapped in the fighting," in the combat zone in the northeast of the island, Mr. Michel said in a statement.
"Everything must be done to prevent the suffering of the population and stop further bloodshed and I therefore urge that a window of cessation of hostilities be agreed by the parties to allow civilians to leave the combat zone," he urged.
Mr. Michel said the top priorities at the moment were the safe passage for food convoys organised by the World Food Programme, and full access for medical staff and life-saving medicines.
Meanwhile British Foreign Secretary David Miliband also reiterated calls for a humanitarian ceasefire. He said the conflict in Sri Lanka is of continuing serious concern to the UK and its people.
“Military advances by the Sri Lankan Government against the LTTE have come at a severe humanitarian cost. I am extremely concerned about the humanitarian situation in northern Sri Lanka and the continued reports of civilian casualties. The situation has deteriorated fast in the last few days. The Prime Minister called for a ceasefire on January 14. I repeat that call and urge both parties to agree an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.”

No humanitarian ceasefire- Gotabaya Rajapaksa/SL-Defence Secretary(US citizen)
Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in an interview with the BBC ruled out any ceasefire for humanitarian reasons, saying it would give the Tigers a chance to reorganize. He also said that he had a policy of "zero" civilian casualties.
"The purpose of this offensive is to eradicate them," he said. The military say they are involved in a final push against retreating rebels.
