Parliamentarian Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena has written to the Defence Secretary, asking that defence officials be instructed to facilitate a planned visit by him to the Wanni.
Dr. Jayawardena says in his letter that he would like to visit the area to ascertain the situation of the displaced people.
"….I will be taking my own risk and would like to join with the ICRC on a day when there is a convoy going to the Wanni and will be returning with the ICRC," his letter said.
The MP said he also plans to meet with catholic clergy, government officials and local community leaders during the visit regarding the needs and the situation of the displaced persons.
"I will be traveling in my own vehicle Land Cruiser…I feel that the government will not hesitate to facilitate my visit," he added.
Dr. Jaywardena said copies of his letter to Mr. Gotabhaya Rajapaska have been sent to president Mahinda Rajapkasa and other local and international leaders.
He told 'Lanka Dissent' that he was yet to receive a response to the letter, sent on December 30th.
