Jayalath seeks visit to Wanni

UNP MP Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena has written to Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse seeking permission to visit the Wanni to assess the situation faced by the displaced people in the area.
Mr. Jayawardena, in his letter to the Defence Secretary which was released to the media, quotes him as saying he would visit areas with officials of the ICRC where food distribution is being carried out

“I am also planning to meet the Catholic Priests and Sisters in these areas who are with the people, the Government Agents of Kilinochchi and Mullativu, Health Officials and the local community leaders, in order to ascertain the needs and the situation of the internally displaced persons,” he said.

The UNP MP says he will also be in touch with the Head of Delegation of the ICRC in Sri Lanka and the Government Agents of Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi, Health Officials and Community leaders during his proposed visit to the Wanni.

“I have received several reliable information that over 200,000 innocent people are being caught in the war in the Wanni and those people have been internally displaced more than a couple of times,” he noted.

Mr. Jayawardena said he hopes the Secretary of Defence will instruct Defence Officials to render their cooperation and assistance for his visit.
