A vessel loaded with 2,000 metric tons of relief assistance from the Government of India for Internally displaced Tamils in the Vanni district of the Northern Province had left the Port of Chennai and would arrive in Sri Lanka within the next few days, ICRC spokesperson Ms Sarasi Wijeratne said.
She said that the officials from the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka would hand over the consignment to the ICRC.
She said a senior representative of the ICRC had visited India last week to assess the food and reported back that it conformed to international standards
Indian High Commission sources said that the consignment would comprise 80,000 family packs, for individual families, each containing eight items such as a saree, a dhoti, two bed sheets, a night dress, and a lungie in addition to 15 kgs of rice,2 kgs dhal, 1 kg sugar, two packs of tea, a bottle of oil, a cake of bath soap, a detergent soap and toothpaste.
