Tissainayagam faces threats in new prison
Media rights groups yesterday urged to move senior journalist J. S. Tissainayagam to a safer place as he had complained of threats in the new prison he was transferred to on Tuesday.
Tissainayagam was transferred from the remand prison to the magazine prison in Colombo. Tissainayagam, a Tamil journalist, was arrested by the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) in March this year, on suspicion for aiding the LTTE in the articles he published in a northeastern monthly magazine. He was also charged with obtaining information and donating funds for the purpose of terrorism.
According to media groups, he claimed that he was being threatened and harassed by the TID during his trial, and that his written confession was a mere product of relentless pressuring from his captors. The arrested journalist was kept in custody in a remand prison, till November 18 after which he was moved to a prison housing convicted felons.
Tissainayagam has reportedly been facing threats from the criminals and has been deprived of meals during his stay. Media rights groups have expressed their concern over the unwarranted move and are attempting to bring the issue to attention and move Tissainayagam to a safer place. (SR)
