Tamil Nadu convenes all party meeting on Lanka
Tamil Nadu State Government has decided to convene an all-party meeting on the Sri Lankan issue on October 14, the Indian media reported.
In an official release on Thursday, the government said that the Indian government had initiated steps on the ethnic crisis in Sri Lanka.
“The all-party meeting will urge the Indian government to take further steps towards a peaceful settlement of the issue and request the Sri Lankan Government to stop the genocide of Tamils,’’ it stated.
Letters will be sent to all political parties in the State, inviting them to participate in the meeting to be held at the Secretariat. It may be recalled that the Left parties had conducted a fast on October 2 to protest against the killing of Tamils. However, the ruling DMK stayed away from the protest.
Though the AIADMK did not take part, it extended support to the MDMK leader Vaiko’s call for a demonstration on the same issue.
Earlier in the day, AIADMK General Secretary J. Jayalalithaa criticized the State government for not acting enough for the Tamils’ cause.
Meanwhile according to reports LTTE political chief B. Nadesan has written to Tamil Nadu saying the LTTE hoped the "solidarity" extended by Indian politicians would become "practically sound political support.
Writing to Tamil Nadu leaders Nadesan also alleged that the Sri Lankan government was "conceited in its military aggression."
Nadesan's letter described the plight of thousands of Tamils uprooted from their homes and villages and forced to seek refuge in the open due to the war.
The Indian central government this week expressed "grave concern and unhappiness" at the mounting casualties among unarmed Tamil civilians in the military offensive and asked Colombo to "act with greater restraint."
