HRC reaches out to displaced children in the North
Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission’s National Protection and Durable Solutions for displaced people has decided to establish a child protection desk at its Vavuniya regional office as a pilot project to assist more than 40,000 children who are among those recently displaced in the North.
“Due to the displacement, among the other repercussions, the mechanisms for the protection and development of children have been neutralized.
The education patterns of the children have collapsed. Consequent to the displacement, health hazards and other social and economic problems arise due to poverty in the family. It also has a great impact on children. In addition, they are being exposed to child abuse, child trafficking and child labour and especially to the threat of becoming child soldiers.
Therefore the HR project for displaced people has paid special attention on conflict affected displaced children and their rights on this Children’s Day of 2008,” Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission said.
It said due to the ongoing conflict in Mannar, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, it is estimated that more than 200,000 persons have been displaced and they would arrive in Vavuniya. It is believed that there would be 40,000 children among those recently displaced and special actions targeting their protection were needed.
The Child Protection Desk encompasses the structuring and arrangement of mechanisms dealing with children targeting their protection, receiving complaints regarding child rights violations and provide remedies thereby facilitating programmes and activities targeting protection and development of children, appointing a special ambassador on children, developing a child protection network through creating a new web link in the project website and opening a hot line in three languages.
