Relatives call for disappearance probe

A group of residents from Pesalai, Mannar urge the government to provide information about their loved ones who disappeared during the war.
The relatives of those disappeared made this appeal at a media conference summoned by the Inter University Student Union.

The relatives spoke to the media on the condition of anonymity.

A mother said her son disappeared when he came to Colombo in 2008. She said she complained to the police, Human Rights Commission and Tamil politicians but so far she did not get any information about her son.

Another mother said that her son was abducted by a white van in Mannar in the year 2007.

Fear of complaining

Weeping and crying she said that she had not complained about her son's disappearance to security forces due to the fear for her life.

A middle-aged woman said that her younger brother who was the breadwinner of the family disappeared in 2008.

She said as a result of her brother's disappearance she and her old mother are now in a helpless situation.

Promises

A farther said that politicians who came to the north gave assurances to look and find information about his disappeared son but they have forgotten about it now.

Concluding the media conference, the convenor of the Inter University Student Union, Udul Premaratne said that the government should give an explanation as to what had happened to those disappeared as the responsibility lies at the hand of the government
